Introduction to Mental Illness

Date:2025-02-15

◎ Mental Illness:
The causes of mental illness may stem from environmental, genetic and biological factors. Conditions include anxiety disorders, depression, psychosomatic disorders, personality disorders, adjustment disorders, dementia, substance abuse and dependence, schizophrenia, among others. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. Treatment for mental illness includes medication, psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, environmental therapy, and rehabilitation therapy.

◎ Important Reminders:
1. There is no shame in having a mental illness. Facing the reality and seeking medical help early can lead to better control of the condition.

2. Mental illnesses are preventable and treatable, but they have a broad impact and should not be ignored.

3. Long-term treatment is often required for mental illnesses; therefore, patients and their families must have patience, confidence, and perseverance to navigate the treatment process together.

4. Avoid repressing stress and negative emotions. Find suitable ways to relieve stress and seek help when necessary.

5. Patients with mental illness are not alone. The “Mental Health Act” safeguards their rights, and the healthcare team will also assist by providing access to relevant social resources and welfare policies.
