Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Overview

The Rehabilitation Department provides professional services to assist patients in recovering from injuries and illnesses, aiming to enhance their physical function and restore overall functionality. The department offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. Physical therapy primarily focuses on therapeutic exercises, supplemented by modalities such as heat, water, electrical stimulation, and light therapy devices, to help patients achieve optimal physiological conditions.

Services

The primary objectives of treatment are to alleviate or eliminate pain, enhance or maintain muscle strength and endurance, increase or preserve joint mobility, and improve neuromuscular balance and coordination. Additionally, the department provides educational resources and assistive devices to correct and prevent the development of contractures and deformities, thereby achieving preventive functional re-education.

Occupational therapy utilizes a variety of assistive devices and therapeutic activities to support patients. Treatment goals encompass addressing conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tendonitis.

Speech therapy employs a range of assessments and tools to evaluate, diagnose, and treat issues related to speech communication and swallowing. This service is designed for children with language development challenges, as well as adults with swallowing or communication difficulties.

Service Items

  • Central Nervous System Diseases and Sequelae: stroke, brain injuries, neurodegenerative diseases, encephalitis, tumors, spinal cord disorders (motor neuron disease, myelitis, compressive lesions)
  • Peripheral Nerve Diseases and Sequelae: facial nerve paralysis, diabetic neuropathy, carpal tunnel syndrome, radiculopathy, sciatica, nerve injuries, neuralgia
  • Muscle Diseases: myofasciitis, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy, polymyositis, chronic pain syndromes
  • Other Neurological Conditions: herniated discs, spinal arthritis, foraminal stenosis
  • Post-Fracture Sequelae: joint contractures, muscle atrophy, limb length discrepancy
  • Soft Tissue Injuries: bursitis, tendonitis, muscle and ligament strains, post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Joint Diseases and Sequelae: arthritis, joint deformities, post-joint replacement complications
  • Spinal Deformities: kyphosis, scoliosis, spinal fractures with displacement
  • Home Assistive Device Assessment: electric beds, wheelchairs, air mattresses
  • Splint Fabrication: protective and functional splints for upper/lower limbs
  • Speech and Communication Disorders: assessment, diagnosis, treatment for both children and adults
  • Swallowing Disorders: assessment, diagnosis, and treatment

The Ministry of Health and Welfare’s pilot program for acute post-stroke care is implemented in designated hospitals. Based on each patient’s level of disability, integrated rehabilitation care is provided during the critical three-month treatment window.

Future Outlook

  • Establish early intervention services to reduce disability severity and promote normal development in children.
  • Introduce robotic arm technology with electronic sensors to assist neuroplasticity and motor training.
  • Implement virtual reality rehabilitation to improve real-world motor application through interactive 3D training environments.
