The hospital held the “2025 Consensus Retreat ” at the Miaoli WEST LAKE RESORTOPIA on Saturday, January 18. The activity was hosted by our Dean, Major General Shih,Yu-Lung.

During the activity, Chen,Shih-An, Honorary Dean of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, was invited to share with us the sustainable development strategy and practical promotion of medical institutions. Dean Chen first emphasized the importance of promoting sustainable development in the healthcare system, stating that the carbon emissions in the healthcare sector are higher than those in other countries around the world. Faced with the four major transformation strategies of the country, it can be expected that the probability of incorporating ESG into hospital evaluation will be high in the future,Therefore, it is our responsibility to promote ESG sustainable development in medical institutions, and we emphasize that the basic ESG of hospitals is not carbon, charity or governance, but BCM that can maintain high standards of “medical quality, doctor-patient relationship and sustainable operation” under any circumstances.

In his speech, Dean Chen shared various strategies of Taichung Veterans General Hospital to promote sustainable development, such as comprehensive paperless medical operations, and put forward five specific suggestions for promoting ESG, including “top-down, bottom-up, energy enhancement and frequency matching, developing activities that are recognized by the publicand defining and deepening governance of key issues.”He hopes that the medical field can move towards net zero carbon reduction by 2050 and practice green healthcare.

Continuing to invite Director You,Chia-Wen from the National Institute of Information Security to give a keynote speech on “Implementing Information Security and Ensuring Medical Services”.Director You shared the experience of the National Information and Communications Security Research Institute, talked about the ESG strategy of information, and also mentioned the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and its vulnerabilities (bugs). Regarding medical information security risks, Director You emphasized that social engineering emails are the main channel for hacker intrusion, so hospitals should implement inventory and update systems, and build multi-level information security protection benchmarksto effectively manage risks.

In addition to the speech, we also invited Jiang,Siao-Shen, the head of the Jingyouqu Practical Education Workshop, to lead the teaching assistants to assist in the ice-breaking game.Learn about the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the concepts of their practical actions.By promoting participation in board games, colleagues can experience, think about, articulate the country’s various decisions on sustainable issues and extend this to hospitals and individual actions, strengthening the concept of sustainable development among colleagues.

In the afternoon, after referring to the sustainability reports of many hospitals, our hospital planned to have the supervisors group the opinions of four important stakeholders: “supervisory authorities, hospital staff, patients and their families, and community residents.”From group discussions and exchanges to reports, we identified the sustainable development issues that are important to key stakeholders, thought about the ESG issues that the hospital should pay attention to, and formulated corresponding action plans. At the end of the activity, all voted to decide the priority order for promoting sustainable development in the future, which is also an important direction for the hospital to implement ESG policies.

During the activity, Dean Shih stated, “Holding a consensus camp at the resort allows us to experience the atmosphere of vacation and leisure. The purpose of organizing a consensus camp is primarily to gather consensus among colleagues, promote discussions and exchanges, and facilitate mutual learning. This event connects sustainable development and ESG (Environmental Protection, Social Inclusion, Hospital Governance) issues. Our hospital has already passed ISO50001 certification and continues to promote carbon inventory. We believe that in the near future, we can write our own sustainability report. In addition, we encourage colleagues from various units to actively participate in competitions and strive for various certifications, such as obtaining green building certification for newly built medical buildings, and gradually promote the transformation of smart hospitals to strengthen the capacity of hospital medical services”

After a full day of enriching courses and experiences, all the participants gained a lot and made great contributions. They proposed specific action plans for the hospital’s future actions in ESG and completed three concrete ESG action tree posters. The consensus camp was attended by 70 people including Vice Dean of Colonel Tsai,Shih-Hung, ViceDeanfor Teaching Mr. Li,Jian-Da, Director of Political Warfare Colonel Hsu,Jui-Hsien and other first-level managers of the hospital, colleagues from various medical professions, and research project leaders.
