Located near the East area of Taiping District in Taichung, the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery at TAFGH is one of the leading academic hospitals in Urologic education, and training. We research and strive to provide the best services & medical care to our patients.
Inclusive of the faculty of general urology, andrology, female urology, geriatric & pediatric urology, and minimal invasive surgery (such as laparoscopy), in addition to performing advanced researches, we also offers training in the most precise diagnosis, treatment, and management options for the variety of many urologic problems.
Our website has information for students, on-training PGY & residents, urology patients & family, surgeons & physicians, faculty members, and research staff. People can also find descriptions of our medical services, patient-focused information, and current clinical trials. This site is organized & well-performed so that people can fast and easily receive the information they need, even more, individual for you.
Moreover, our young attending Dr. Liao has also finished his PhD, who also plays an important role and member in TAA (Taiwan Andrology Association, acting as the Deputy Secretary-General), TUOA (Taiwan Uro-Oncology Association, acting as the Supervisor), and CUCA (Chinese Urological Care Association, acting as the Supervisor).
He has full of enthusiasm for the administrative affairs of the society, esp. in TUA (Taiwan Urology Association); following the attending Dr. Shen & Wang, who are both studying for the doctorate degree. They all pay whole passion in the future development of our urology division, all under the instructions of director Dr. Yi.
As urologists, we care both male and female patients with any urinary symptoms, as well as male patients with any reproductive system disorders. It is therefore a misconception that only men can visit the division of urology. The urinary system consists of the kidneys, the ureters, the bladder, and the urethra.
As to the organs of the male reproductive system, they include the testicles, the epididymis, the vas deferens, the seminal vesicles, the prostate gland, the penis and the scrotum.
Female patients with reproductive disorders, for their part, should consult gynecologists. Other conditions treated by urologists also include adrenal gland disorders and retroperitoneal tumors. Our output clinic can provide complete service including: urolithiasis (ESWL), urinary tract infection, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male sexual dysfunction, some surgeries under local anesthesia such as phimosis circumcision, vasectomies for birth control, and urodynamic studies for functional urology.

Our Division of Urology was established in 1985, and Dr. Guo-bin Pan served as the first head of the Division (1986~1987), followed by Zhu-shan Yuan(1987~1989), Ci-yan Xiao (1989~1990), Zhong-yuan Yan, (1990~1991), Shaw-yeu Jeng (1991~1997), Jane-dar Lee (1997~2007), Ling-yi Lu (2007~2010), Wen-hsuan Zheng (2010~2015), Chih-cheng Yi (2015~present), and other eight session directors’ efforts, plus Shi-hua Xiang, with the concerted efforts of early and late attending surgeons, such as Ying-xian Ding, Long-chang Que, Xun-qing Chai, Ci-xiang Zhang, Ming-zhe Ji, Cheng-hsi Liao, Jing-dung Shen, Bo-Ren Wang…etc., the undergraduate has its current scale. At the beginning of the undergraduate course, material resources were difficult. After the three directors Pan, Yuan and Xiao overcome all the difficulties, they began to introduce all kinds of urinary endoscopes, making the undergraduate rough and rudimentary. Director Zhong-yuan Yan specializes in kidney transplantation and completed the first kidney transplant operation in this hospital during his tenure. At that time, it was the only non-medical center hospital that could perform kidney transplantation in the central region. Dr. Shao-yu Zheng is the first director of the undergraduate degree with a PhD. He introduced extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in his appointment and created a new era in the treatment of upper urinary tract stones in this hospital; at the same time, he led the undergraduate to pass the training and evaluation of urology specialists, so that the undergraduate can start training Specialist to be an urologist. Director Jane-dar Lee returned from his studies in the United States. He not only brought back brand-new concepts and techniques for women in the field of urinary incontinence & functional urology (so-called female urology), but also obtained a PhD. He has made a breakthrough in the basic research of varicocele, enabling his undergraduate degree to truly achieve service, teaching, and research. Then with the efforts of several directors from Dr. Lu, Zheng, and now Yi, we’ve developed minimal invasive surgery (MIS), such as laparoscopy applying in the surgery of inguinal hernia, varicocele, and nephrectomy. In addition to traditional endoscopic surgery and general urology common operations, our service projects have been committed to the development of laser surgery (for stone & BPH), various urinary incontinence surgeries (TVT-O), and bladder injection surgeries (BCG for CIS or Botox injection for IC) in recent years. Medical services are one of our mission, keep moving towards the three goals of service, research and teaching.
